The six-axle diesel locomotive of the 770 series was supplied under the original designation T 669.0 by ČKD Praha and Strojárske a metallurgické závody Dubnica nad Váhom. The prototype was produced in 1963, serial production took place between 1967 and 1969. A total of 108 locomotives were produced for ČSD, and others were produced for industrial sidings. The locomotives were mainly used for shunting at marshalling yards and for running handling trains.
More important, however, were orders for export. It was the export version for the countries of the former USSR that gave the locomotive its nickname. ČME3 - Čechoslovackij těplovoz Maněvrovyj s Električeskoj pěredačej (Czechoslovak motor shunting locomotive with electric power transmission). A total of 7459 locomotives were delivered to the former Soviet Union, with several hundred more exported to other countries - Albania, Syria, Iraq and India. This is one of the largest series of locomotives of one type in the world. Even after sixty years of operation, they still have an irreplaceable place on our rails.
