They are iconic primarily for their unmistakable appearance, which stands out among other cars. They were designed primarily for transporting powdered cement and limestone. They first appeared on ČSD tracks in the late 1950s.
They catch the eye at first glance with their unusual design – instead of one large container, four smaller ones (“onions”) were chosen, which can be loaded and unloaded individually. This is also where their nickname comes from.
They were manufactured and supplied in a wide variety of colors according to their owners, which were mainly lime works rather than the state railways. Examples include Cement Hranice, Vápenky Čertovy schody, Krkonošské vápenky Kunčice, Vápenky Vitošov, and many others.
