These electric locomotives, with their unmistakable design by Paul Arzens from the 1960s, prove that even a machine can be a work of art. They defined the face of SNCF for decades. The so‑called “Broken Noses” also became a familiar feature of railways in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Portugal, Morocco, Brazil, and South Korea. In total, several hundred of these locomotives were built, including the derived diesel variants.
Although these machines are now gradually giving way to more modern locomotive classes, their unmistakable silhouette with the forward‑slanted windshield remains an unequalled high point of Western European railway design.
