October 1, 1964, was a great day for Japan. On that day, the new Tōkaidō Shinkansen high-speed railway line, connecting Tokyo with Osaka, was ceremonially opened. The brand-new line was served by the Series 0 Shinkansen trains, whose aerodynamic design and exceptional speed represented a major step forward in rail transport. Reaching speeds of over 200 kilometers per hour, these trainsets reduced travel time between the two major cities to approximately four hours. With this, Japanese National Railways put the world’s first regular high-speed railway into operation.

The Series 0 trains featured a distinctive rounded front resembling an aircraft nose and were capable of speeds of up to 220 km/h. They became a symbol of Japan’s technological progress and a synonym for the Shinkansen (“new main line”). The last trainsets were not withdrawn from service until 2008. Because of their rounded nose, the Japanese affectionately nicknamed them Dango-bana (0系 団子鼻) — “dumpling nose.”

Although the “zeros” have long since disappeared from regular service, they are now rare and highly valued exhibits in railway museums in Japan, as well as in Taiwan and in the English city of York.
