The single-arm semaphore signal has been used on railways since the middle of the 19th century - inspired by maritime signalling.
They were operated by wire wires and lit in the evening by lamps burning rapeseed oil, kerosene or lamp gas.
This design was inspired by the Austrian-based semaphore type from Martinice, Czech Republic, dating from 1946.
