Almost 24 metres long, the machines reached a speed of 120 km/h with a claimed power of almost 1650kW.
Later on, the enlarged wheels (from 800 to 1000 mm) and an improved braking system allowed a top speed of 130 km/h. Their two-metre-long drive coupled wheels were powered by a superheated steam boiler.
01 005 from the pre-production serie, in the Staßfurt Railway Museum, is the oldest surviving steam locomotive according to the principle of standardisation in Germany and is one of 231 "old zero-ones" that had a pivotal impact on express train services throughout Germany - for a long 57 years.
