In German‑speaking regions of Central and Eastern Europe, the indication shown by mechanical home signals is conveyed through the position of one or more movable arms mounted on a fixed mast.

In the example shown here, the arm is raised by 45° above the horizontal “Stop” position to display the signal “Clear” (Hp1). This aspect authorises trains to proceed at the speed permitted by the timetable, unless restricted by other signals or special regulations.

Historically, mechanical semaphore signals have deep roots in the early era of European railways. Their design, reminiscent of early telegraph technology, initially served to pass information about train movements and later evolved to transmit full route and speed indications.

Each railway company once had its own signal designs and constructions. After the formation of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) in 1926, the six former royal state railways worked towards standardisation. In the 1930s, a unified signalling rulebook was introduced, in which separate mechanical distant and home signals were to display only speed indications. Existing construction types, however, remained valid for some time.

Thus, our semaphore signal represents a piece of signalling equipment whose basic form is more than 100 years old and one that is still used in daily operation today. Its appearance originates from the progressive Royal Saxon State Railways at the end of the 19th century — and for us railway enthusiasts, it has always meant only one thing: “FAHRT FREI!”
