In the 1950s, the still young Deutsche Bundesbahn drew up an ambitious plan to modernize its fleet of locomotives and rolling stock. For medium-duty shunting work, a 48.3‑ton locomotive was developed from 1951 onwards. It used the then common rod drive system—at a time when steam locomotives such as the BR 23 were still in production until 1959—which transmitted power via a “jackshaft reversing mechanism” to all three coupled axles.

Between 1955 and 1964, a total of 942 units left the production halls of almost all West German locomotive manufacturers. From 1958 onward, this included 319 locomotives built with a heavier frame design and a service weight of 53.4 tons, making them better suited for hauling freight and passenger trains on branch lines.

Lovingly nicknamed the “Tripod,” the V 60 was delivered brand‑new not only to the Bundesbahn, but—after withdrawal from DB service—also found its way to state and private railways in Chile, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Yugoslavia, and Algeria. In addition, 69 units were built under license in Belgium for France and the Netherlands.

Today, V 60 locomotives remain in service with DB AG—Dresden‑based 362 362, built in 1957, is the oldest locomotive still in active operation at DB AG—as well as with numerous private and heritage railways.

And for the detail enthusiasts: Over the years, DB’s 632–650 HP V 60s were reclassified several times. From 1968 they were split into light (BR 260/360) and heavy versions (BR 261/361). After being equipped with radio remote control and automatic couplers for one‑person shunting operations from 1987, they became BR 364/365. Finally, after the remaining units were rebuilt with 12‑cylinder Caterpillar engines delivering 465 kW, they received their current designations BR 362 and BR 363.
